SIBANYE STILLWATER

Kloof four shaft- Shaft feeders differential protection upgrade:
New differential protection was installed on all Shaft feeders, with the old protection doors replaced by the new differential protection doors and components. The installation was performed in situ, and each feeder had its diff protection commissioned, FAT-tested, and successfully verified.

CENTRAL POWER STATION (RANDFONTEIN ESTATES) PROJECT

A new MV protection upgrade was performed on the old MV switchgear. The project involved the removal of old protection relays and components from the previous switchgear. A new protection door design was implemented, fitted with new protection components, and subsequently wired and installed on the switchgear. Following the completion of Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and programming, the new protection system underwent successful testing. Finally, the MV switchgear was re-installed onsite.


Protection Panel Upgrade – Sibanye Stillwater

Sesha Engineering (Pty) Ltd successfully executed a comprehensive upgrade of an aging Hawker Siddeley protection panel for Sibanye Stillwater. The project aimed to renew and modernize the protection system to ensure improved reliability and enhanced operational safety.
The upgrade involved:
Full rewiring of the protection panel

  • Replacement of outdated current transformers

Installation of a modern SEL 751 relay, replacing the legacy CDG relay

  • Fabrication and installation of a new protection panel door

By integrating the SEL 751 relay, the project brought advanced protection features and communication capabilities to the existing infrastructure, ensuring the panel meets current industry standards. The outcome is a revitalized protection system tailored for long-term performance and dependability.





Substation Protection Upgrade – Sibanye Stillwater

Scope: Complete Substation Protection Upgrade

Sesha Engineering (Pty) Ltd delivered a full-scale protection upgrade for a substation at Sibanye Stillwater, focused on enhancing safety, reliability, and modern operational capabilities.
The project involved:
Complete rewiring of existing protection panels


  • Replacement of all protection equipment, including panel doors and current transformers

Integration of SEL arc protection systems to provide advanced fault detection and personnel safety
This comprehensive upgrade modernized the substation’s protection scheme, aligning it with current technological and safety standards. With SEL’s arc protection in place, the system now offers faster fault isolation, minimizing equipment damage and reducing downtime.











GEC SBV2 Motor Protection Panel Renewal – Sibanye Stillwater

Scope: Motor Protection Panel Upgrade

Sesha Engineering (Pty) Ltd completed the renewal of a legacy GEC SBV2 motor protection panel for Sibanye Stillwater. The goal was to modernize the protection system while maintaining integration with the site’s existing infrastructure.

Full rewiring of the panel


  • Installation of a new panel door equipped with a SEL 749M motor protection relay

Successful integration with an existing PLC system controlling the motor
One of the major challenges was ensuring compatibility between the new SEL 749M relay and the older PLC hardware. By carefully specifying and configuring the relay, our team achieved seamless integration—delivering a modern protection solution without compromising the existing control logic.
This upgrade not only extended the operational life of the panel but also introduced advanced protection and diagnostic features aligned with modern standards








MV Fan Motor Protection System Upgrade – Sibanye Stillwater

Scope: Primary & Secondary Protection System Upgrade
Project Type: Medium Voltage Motor Protection Modernization
Sesha Engineering (Pty) Ltd delivered a full-scale Medium Voltage (MV) fan motor protection upgrade for Sibanye Stillwater, aimed at enhancing equipment reliability, protection, and automation capabilities.
The project involved:
Installation of a new panel door equipped with a SEL 710 motor protection relay


  • Complete rewiring of the existing primary protection panel

Upgrade of current transformers for accurate and reliable measurements


  • Replacement of the secondary protection panel with a custom-designed solution from Sesha Engineering

The newly designed secondary panel provides advanced protection features, including monitoring for:
